GEFCO UK receives Supplier Excellence Award from major customer

15 November 2019

Following a 12-month period with zero PPM deliveries, SMR UK have acknowledged GEFCO UK of their commitment, focus and determination.

At the beginning of 2016, GEFCO UK began the discussions with SMR, a global manufacturer of rear-view mirrors, on how their current operational requirements could be improved. After an extensive consultation period with their operational team and studying their current business module, GEFCO UK were able to identify how they could improve SMR’S current supply chain.

In April 2018, GEFCO UK began the sequencing operation on behalf of SMR from their Prologis site in Coventry. This would involve a team of 36 operational and management staff working across 3 shift patterns.

The operation consisted of the decanting and storage of parts shipped in from Porchester and Spain. The parts were then delivered to 3 different assembly lines for one of SMR UK’s major customers in line with their live production line requirements.

This project has proven to be a huge success for both SMR and GEFCO UK, commenting on the flourishing relationship between both companies, John Lane, Quality director at SMR, explained:

“In 2017 SMR UK had a clear objective to achieve the prestigious JLRQ award, one issue in achieving this award was the performance and relationship of our 3PL partner. At that time, we took the decision to move away from them and begin a partnership with GEFCO UK.

SMR UK’s six-month PPM into Jaguar Land Rover was 120, today this sits at 10. This is an amazing turnaround which has been supported by GEFCO. GEFCO has just completed a 12-month period with zero PPM and this has clearly supported SMR in its ambition to be a JLRQ supplier. As Quality Director, the systems and process are key. This must be backed up by trained, engaged staff and in this is what has been the difference working with GEFCO.

It’s with great pride that during October, Andrew McClure, STA Launch, Supply Management, Supply Assurance and SPQ Director and Jaguar Land Rover Purchasing visited Portchester to award SMRUK with the JLRQ award.

I’d like to take this opportunity to come and share this success with the GEFCO team as they have all played a major part in SMR achieving this award, and in turn SMR reward them with our Supplier Excellence Award for their commitment, focus and determination.”

In response to these fantastic comments, Transport and Logistics Director, Cedric Chacon, said: "The GEFCO team is proud to help achieve such a result for SMR and JLR. We are grateful to the whole team for their continued commitment, focus and determination. We have developed a strong partnership over the last few years with SMR based on mutual trust and both companies have learned and improved together."
