GEFCO’s Logistics Operation for Delphi Packard

The GEFCO logistics operation undertaken for Delphi Packard began in 2003. The key objectives of this operation for GEFCO was to ensure the smooth distribution of Delphi components from their factory in Istanbul, Turkey, to GEFCO’s regional distribution center in Coventry, from where Ford collects and delivers to their plant in Southampton. On arrival, a GEFCO team organises the line-side sequencing of the delivered parts. The main objective for Delphi was to reduce the current lead-time on this route, as well as gain from GEFCO valuable supply chain expertise and competitive prices.

The project was expected to have a number of benefits for Delphi, as well as GEFCO. Delphi chose GEFCO as they offered a totally customised solution, dedicated support and competitive rates. The key benefit to GEFCO was increased business and the growth of international opportunities. GEFCO could also benefit in the future from an increased number of contracts for Delphi’s other divisions.

GEFCO an Expert in Automotive Logistics

As automotive manufacturers have faced growing pressures to find leaner ways to operate and reduce operating costs, logistics providers have played a pivotal role in creating strategic solutions.

In response to customer requirements, a major logistics industry trend has been the development of integrated solutions, joining up transportation, storage and information transfer to deliver better supply chain value.

Delphi, the world’s largest automotive parts supplier has paid particular attention in recent years to improving its ability to help its manufacturing customers run lean, just-in-time operations.

In 2003, Delphi Packard sought a partner to improve the transfer of parts from its manufacturing facility in Istanbul, Turkey, to support Ford Motor Company’s assembly plant in Southampton, UK.  A key consideration was to give Ford the flexibility to adopt a batch or ‘in-sequence’ approach to parts intake and the freedom to adapt its production approach to meet future requirements.

GEFCO, is one of the world’s leading logistics integrators, operating in over 80 countries.  It has exposure to every aspect of the modern global supply chain, with a worldwide network combining all transportation modes and a fully integrated information system.

Peugeot 107 Sport XS – finished at Sandtoft

Background

Having enjoyed the limelight during the 1970s, including TV and film parts in Starsky and Hutch, The Professionals and a number of 007 films, go-faster stripes were consigned to the style wilderness many years ago.

But, as with so many iconic stylistic devices, they have been making a major retro-fuelled come-back in recent years on customised vehicles – a resurgence not missed by the designers at Peugeot.

When designing the new 107, Peugeot typically chose to create a car brimming with flair and the 107 Sport XS was chosen as the model to literally earn its stripes. Complete with a stylish front bumper, white wing mirrors, smart alloys and twin centre-exit exhaust pipes, it has been topping critics charts and readers’ polls since its launch in 2007.

Helping UK customers benefit from the Eastward shift in manufacturing

GEFCO, one of the largest providers of supply chain management and logistics services in Europe, has responded boldly to the West-East shift in manufacturing that has characterised the continent’s economic development over the past decade.

The latest in a series of innovations designed to improve operational quality and efficiency for its pan-European customers, GEFCO UK has created a seamless link between two of its state of the art logistics facilities.

GEFCO UK’s Coventry industrial logistics integration (ILI) facility has been, in effect, twinned with GEFCO Poland’s major Poznan facility, using predictive supply chain management software and a special line-haul to minimise handling and delays for customers based in the UK and Central and Eastern Europe.

Both the Coventry and Poznan facilities were opened in early 2006 and have seen unprecedented growth in use by customers moving parts and finished goods on the East-West axis of Continental Europe.
